ESL announces new Pro League overtime points system

ESL has announced a change to the points system in overtime matches, which will now be counted differently, as well as a change to the startmoney awarded during overtime.

With just four days until ESL's Pro League kicks off, the Cologne-based tournament organizer has announced changes to the number of points awarded in matches that go to overtime, as winners will now take two points, instead of three, and losers will take a point, instead of zero.

ESL's Pro League matches going into overtime will now award two points to winners and one to losers

The changes come as a result of feedback from players at the Season 5 finals, in Dallas, and come into effect immediately. ESL hopes that, with this new system, they will be able to avoid the sort of tiebreaker nightmare from last season, as shown on a mock table, here.

The other change is that the start money will now be set at 16,000 up from 10,000, while the maximum number of rounds remains set at 6 (i.e.: three rounds per half).

why would you reduce the points a teams gets if they won a game in OT? OT is just an extension for the regulation to decide who gets the W and not who gets (2/3)W. same with 16-1 and 16-14, both give the same points in leagues (some leagues use RD for tie breaking, but not more than that) because the same rule applies - a win is a win.

You are overthinking it. A team that wins in OT is still rewarded more points that the one that lost. This is still better than to leave teams that draw 15-15 with 1 point each. Their idea is good and will most likely avoid all the drama that the ties bring at the end of the season.

You are not wrong, yet the way esl's rule still makes sense. The 15-15 secures both teams a point, the ot win secures just gives another point to the winner. I'd rather see teams fight even harder for that extra point than to see teams out of the lan finals because of RD in a game that is so reliant on maps and sides most of the time.

bro you arent thinking this through, they trying to have a way for the strongest teams to make it through instead of weaker teams getting lucky and winning a game OT and still making it through to the next round. These new rules reward teams more for dominant play which to viewers may be boring but ultimately it reduces the amount of upsets which is actually a good thing

I like the change, but does our lord and saviour Donald J Trump like the change? According to chapter MR3, verse 16k: "thou shall not be rewarded for tying. Tying is losing... and losers lose. Anything else is socialism manifest" It'd be cool to see this scoring system retroactively applied to previous seasons, to see if there are any differences, and whether RF/RA/RD (in totality over the season) are better metrics are doing what this change is attempting to fix.

Honestly not convinced by these changes. I agree that teams that get overtime and lose should get a point, but not that those that win in overtime should get fewer points than a regular win. Also, 10k has always been the superior system as it emphasises the economic aspects of CS. 16k makes for very boring repeat-overtimes far too often.
