North invited to IEM Sydney

North is the last invited team to confirm their attendance to the IEM event down under.

The ~$200,000 ($260k AUD) tournament will take place from May 3-7 with the final two days being played in front of a live audience at the Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney, Australia.

Following a top four finish at DreamHack Masters Las Vegas and a 5th-6th placement at IEM Katowice recently, North will be the second team from Denmark to compete at the IEM event. They will join their countrymen, Astralis and four other invited teams in Sydney.

North to travel south for IEM Sydney

To finalise the eight-team tournament, the final two spots will be decided through the Oceanic and Chinese qualifiers. The ANZ qualifier is already underway whilst details about the Chinese qualifier has yet to be revealed by the organisers.

Less than a week ago, there was a change in the rulebook for future IEM events (starting with Sydney) regarding VAC bans. The permanent VAC ban rule has been adjusted to the new ruling - "CS:GO VAC bans are specifically honored, but only until 2 years after they have been issued".

not that nice no VP= no viewers. Bad move by IEM because VP and NIP have the most fans in csgo. For me shit tournament because the first will be Astralis/SK a 3rd Faze/North and that is all. It is between 2 teams maybe FaZe can suprise but North doesn´t playing on top level at the moment

Invitations are ruining the competitiveness of the game, unless there is transparency in how the invites work. It would be much better if the top X from each event automatically received an invite for a future defined event and that the rest would have to go through qualifiers. While I understand that the event organisers are keen on having the major brands associated to their events, this approach is limiting the competitiveness of the game and it makes it harder for new teams to find opportunities to break through. Online and even offline qualifiers, would give upcoming teams and aspiring teams, the opportunity to showcase themselves which in turn would increase their likelihood of finding sponsors, which also would enable them to go to more events and get better. Ergo, change the invites approach and increase the competitiveness of the game - it would also make viewing more exciting.

+1 They didn't invite Heroic or Immortals.. both placed above Optic, SK and North in IEM Katowice. This is exactly why i hate ESL and MTG.

But haven't placed higher than North at ANY other tournament in recent times. So what do you base invites on. The last tournament or recent results (North has been a stable top 5 team on the HLTV rankings in the last 3 months).

The amount of qualifiers is significantly higher compared to any other competitive "sport" out there. If the top teams had to go through a qualifier to play all these tournaments, they would never have a break. So I think it's a pretty good way of doing it. The top teams have proven themselves time after time, if they start playing bad, they will eventually not get an invite. At the same time, upcoming teams get so many chances to prove themselves, since there are qualifiers for basically every event. What more can you expect? If everyone had the same terms, we would never get anywhere. Imagine a world where proven people had to go through the same process time and time again to prove themselves. It's just bungus!

lol what? How do those 2 inconsistent teams dictate if it's a tier 1 event. Literally Faze and Astralis are better... 4 of the best teams are competing and it's tier 2 coz ur fav team didnt attend xD Not to mention VP already played in Australia at the Crown event, a lot of these teams are coming to Australia since they want new experience, Karrigan even said that.
