rallen: "We have to show up vs. VP"

After Kinguin secured the last semi-finals spot at WESG World Finals, we caught up with Karol "rallen" Rodowicz to ask about their group stage and the upcoming Polish battle.

Kinguin reached first place in Group C, where they exchanged maps with Space Soldiers and defeated FIVE, Bravado and Signature.

In the quarter-finals against Epsilon, the Poles fell short in the overtime on Cache while Overpass and Cobblestone went their way comfortably.

rallen is hoping for a good game against his countrymen

In our next interview from WESG, Karol "rallen" Rodowicz talked about the team's group stage, the overtime against the Swedes, and the upcoming battle against their countrymen Virtus.pro.

In Group C you met Space Soldiers apart from some of the lower-tier teams, talk to me about the Turkish team, with whom you exchanged maps.

Space Soldiers play very good Counter-Strike, I think they can beat EnVyUs if they show up like today versus iGame.com. Their Nuke was insane on the CT side. Our game was a lot of our mistakes, because we lost two forces and it fucked us up. I guess they are on a good way to go to the final at this tournament.

What about the lower teams, you had teams such as Signature, FIVE and Bravado in your group, was there anything that impressed you about these teams?

They were playing their game, but for sure we need to remember that DarkPassage and iGame also had awesome games in their group. I guess TyLoo also did very well, because they just changed two players and only had a few days to practice or something like that, and they looked very good versus EnVyUs. It looked like they would win, because it was like 14-12 and they shocked us with that score on the map.

What about those teams in your group, was there any player or anything else that you noticed in your matches?

Detrony from Bravado for sure, but we know this guy from the Major at DreamHack Winter 2014. He was playing very well with the AWP, also sonic in the clutch rounds, he won something like 10 clutches over the four matches, it was insane.

Going over to Epsilon in the quarter-finals, can you tell us what the first map, Cache, looked like, as it went to overtime?

They were playing like FPL style, everyone was peeking every position and we were dying to them a lot. But we came back, it was overtime, but in OT on our T side we didn't know they were going to delay the retake in one of the rounds, at 17-16. We started to peek them too fast and made a huge mistake.

Facing Virtus.pro tomorrow, which is basically a rematch of the third place decider at the regional finals, give us a little preview of that, what is it going to take for you to beat them?

I guess our mission hasn't ended yet, we have to show up. Maybe it's time to change the leader.

As in a leader in Poland?

Yeah, like in Poland, maybe not change the leader, but we want this win versus VP so much, we'll try to do our best, and I hope it will be a very good game.

I did watch the game and I'd know it. But there is still no almost. They won 2-0 at the end nothing else matters. Do you know how it is to play a against a Team that you can't prepare so much due the lack of direct comparison. Its much harder to play against Underdogs than to play against team in your level or even being little bit better than your. DP is a team with good aimers and players it's not so easy. And I mean they were 9-0 infront that gave VP the righttime to strike

Exactly. Good words. I would like to add that DP had a lot more resources to check VP style (I guess they watch VP pretty often).

Exactly it is obviously much harder for VP to study teams like DP. Especially VP is known to have rough times with those teams :-)
2017-01-14 15:02
yes, and you are "almost" smart
2017-01-14 14:49
2-0 is "almost lost" according to Turkey logic. VP underestimated a team that they are not familiar with and they were always doing that. Once they realised kebabs can actually shoot people, they took over.

" Maybe it's time to change the leader. As in a leader in Poland? Yeah, like in Poland, maybe not change the leader" Dat backpedaling though. Feels like that respect for their elders is still there. They'll need to get rid of that if they really want to beat them.

That's even more critical for them to set this respect aside. The more you consider your opponents untouchable, the less you'll be able to do against them.

Totally agree, but I don't think it's possible for them just yet. To believe that they can beat unbeatable legends like Neo and Taz (who were unbeatable for other polish teams even before they started to play together) they probably need more experience with other top 10 teams on majors and other big events. If they manage to beat NIP, SK or NaVi, then they will probably gain enough self confidence to beat VP. Couple years ago, Pasha, before he started to play with Neo and Taz, was asked in interview what his and other polish teams can make to catch up with Golden Five and he answered that he don't think this ever be possible. This is mentality what Kinguin and other polish teams have.

In my opinion, if they still think that way, they're stuck in the past and can't correctly assess the current situation. I think the difference of skill between the G5 of 1.6 and the rest of the polish scene back then is not the same as the difference between VP of CS:GO and the rest of the current polish scene. If they can realize that, they can get through the mental barrier. If not, I guess they're likely to have to wait for the oldest VP guys to retire.

That's a good point. In battle you need to despise the enemy to channel that inner emotion necessary to win.

Not despise no (at least not in competitions, in war it's a complete different story), but it's necessary to at least think that you're better and not just be "meh, they're better but on a good day we might have a chance".

Think Rallen is delusional, sure VP is playing like garbage and can barely beat tier 4 teams like Dark Passage going into overtime but no way is VP ever going to be so bad they'll lose to a tier 4 Polish team on LAN.

Not really, they are a very experienced team that have been together for a very long time the only problem is they have almost no firepower at all so they rely on their experience and team play to win games, when they go up against a team that is mostly just good aimers they struggle but can still get the job done because they know all the situations, they know the big stage, they keep composure, they play well together as a team in pressure situations. But yeah they are a bit inconsistent because they have no firepower, they rely to much on Snax and refuse to make roster changes.
